How Frequently Should You Go For An Eye Test?

An eye examination should be a part of one’s health routine, but we all avoid it until we find it difficult to see things clearly. But the question is should we wait for eye problem to happen in order to visit an ophthalmologist. Well, it should not be the scenario Take children, for instance, researchers say that they should have an eye checkup starting from 6 months of age, another exam at age three and again at the start of school. Most children should continue to have their eyes examined every two years until age 18. And for those who have more chances of developing an eye disease, due to a family background of diabetes or glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc.. But this is certainly not in case of adults who need an annual checkup.

Different Types of Eye Tests:

  • Visual Acuity Tests: In order to measure the sharpness of your vision, a chart is kept in front of you. The doctor makes you read that chart with the letters getting smaller as you move to lower lines.
  • Color Blindness Test: For detecting hereditary color vision deficiencies as well as future problems, this test is carried out.
  • Cover test: It is a simple eye test which is undertaken to check whether your eyes are working together properly or not. It is named so because the doctor covers one of your eyes and tells you to focus on near and far objects for the purpose.
  • Retinoscopy: An ophthalmic testing device, known as phoropter is used by a doctor, which allows him or her to approximate your optimal lens prescription.
  • Refraction test: The is a test that examines patients’ ability to see an object at a particular distance
  • Keratometry test: In this test, a device called keratometer is used to measure the anterior corneal curvature. It is useful for detecting astigmatism.
  • Peripheral Visual Field Test: To check the peripheral vision (see objects on the sides of our field of vision).
  • Intraocular Pressure Measurement: For detecting early signs of glaucoma. It is measured to check if there is a specific level of elevated eye pressure that can lead to glaucoma or not.
You should not avoid these tests to detect early symptoms of diseases which can be disastrous in the long run if undetected. A comprehensive eye test may take about 30 min for adults and 40 min for younger children and cost about 60 – 70 dollars

A recent research in 2018 shows eye examination can be fruitful to identify patients who are prone to develop dementia; a disease marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. This eye test is a simple one which notices the tissues in the back of the eye as people with thin nerve fiber are more likely to fall for dementia.

Difference between Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, and Optician

Coming to another point we all have been confused between the terms Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, and Optician where to go. Let us know what they all mean. An Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye care and is licensed to practice medicine and surgery. They treat various eye problems, perform surgery when needed and prescribe suitable eyeglasses. An Optometrist, on the other hand, is healthcare professionals who are not medical doctors but are licensed to practice optometry, which primarily involves performing eye exams and vision tests. The least in the qualification or you might say specialty is the opticians who are technicians which work on the prescriptions given by Ophthalmologist and Optometrist.
