Steps for Installing Hot Water repairs and Installations:
- Shut off the gas and water: Turn the shutoff valve slightly to turn off the gas. Open the faucet and shut off the main water supply
- Drain the water in the tank: With the help of a pipe wrench unscrew the gas control valve pipe and drain off the water left in the tank.
- Cut off the water lines: Keep aside the vent pipe and unhook the vent. Cut off both the hot water and cold water lines for safety with the help of a tube cutter. Then remove the old water heater out of the location.
- Attach the relief valve: With Teflon tape wrap the pressure relief valve and the threads of the new temperature. With the help of a pipe wrench start screwing it tightly. Lastly, attach a discharge pipe which is made up of copper metal.
- Attach pipe assemblies: Assemble the soldered new copper adapters which come in the size three- fourth in length and screw them in the hot water outlet and also screw the assemblies in the cold water inlet ports located right at the top of the tank. To protect the inside from galvanic corrosion due to hard water, apply plastic-lined nipples.
- Attach the water lines: Install the new heater in its place. For the adjustment purpose, you should either cut or extend the old tube and pipes to meet the new water heater. Later using copper slip couplings solder the tube together.
- Reattach the vent: Then reattach the vent and shove it strongly over the draft hood. Ensure the vent rises at least to 12 inches.
- To attach the gas line using two wrenches: The gas line should be reconnected. The threaded ends should be coated with pipe joint compound and the valve should be screwed with plastic-lined nipples. To avoid stress on the valves try to use two wrenches. Then close the drain valve and turn the water back into the main heater system and also open the cold water valve. Open the hot water faucet which is available nearby. Lastly, check if there is any leak or not, by inspecting all the joints properly.
- Check for back-drafting: Check if the drafts are working or not. As most water heaters naturally work on the drawing of combustion fumes up. After completion of hot water repairs and installations, check the draft.
- Check carefully for leaks: If any leak is found try to readjust all the joints and fittings again. To check for leaks, turn on the gas and see if there is any spilling. Or call the plumber to have a thorough check of the whole installation process.
- Use a lighter to light the pilot light: To adjust the temperature of the new water heater tries to fix the pilot light as per the given instructions in the manual.
