Know All About Suspended Slabs for Constructing Your Dream House

Are you planning to construct your dream house and unable to understand the different aspects of the construction layout given by the civil engineer as well as the architect? Most of us do not understand the technicalities but look for the aesthetics aspect of the building. You should have some idea of construction before you start your dream project so that you get to know the benefits as well as the technicalities. The roof is the essential part of your house, and various types of materials are used to construct it. Suspended slabs are one of the best options to construct the roof of the house. After all, it is the roof over the head that matters.

About Suspended Slabs

These are slabs that are made of steel mesh and concrete. They are pre-fabricated offsite and placed over the surrounding structures with the help of cranes or cast in situ. They are above-ground level slabs and do not come in contact with the ground directly. They form the ceiling of the lower floors and act as the floor for the upper levels. Depending upon the load, the span or depth of the suspended slabs is decided, and beams are placed in between to distribute the weight evenly through the load-bearing columns.

Advantages of Using These Types Of Slabs

  • The suspended slabs can be used in places where you cannot use other types of slabs. Using them in places like steeply sloping terrain is advantageous.
  • The floor area under the slabs can be used for other purposes as well. It is used to build a roof over the head and enables the place below to be used giving a more covered area in the building.
  • As they usually are prefabricated, they are easy to install once the underlying structure that is needed to hold them is constructed and cranes are deployed to lift and place them accurately.
  • They work as a sound barrier and are more effective than joist floors which produce much sound in the lower levels due to the movement of anything on the upper floors.
  • Suspended slabs add an additional layer of concrete and make the house an energy efficient building.
  • The ceiling height can be made adjustable by using these types of slabs as they do not need any additional brickwork to support them.
  • As they are made of concrete, they are fireproof and are much more durable than any other types of slabs made of other such materials.

Disadvantages

  • As the base does not touch the ground, they are not well insulated.
  • Cranes are required to install them.
  • These types of suspended slabs cannot do the top roof of the house as any gaps in the joints might allow water to seep in through them damaging the walls and the interiors of the house.
  • As they are made of concrete and steel recycling of the materials used in the slabs do not cost viable and used primarily as earth fills.
Many types of slabs can be used in the construction of roof. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Suspended slabs are best used in buildings that need to be multistore so that a sturdy structure can be erected without any constructional loopholes. As they are reinforced with steel, they have more loads bearing capacity per square meter of the area. Construction engineers trust them to build your home to make it more durable without much maintenance in the long run. Use these types of slabs while constructing your dream house and stay safe from the adverse weather outside.
