Boats for Sale
Boat sales offer both new and used boat, and it’s a good idea to buy a used boat if you get it in a good condition. However, with buying used boats, you may invite a few troubles if you don’t check the boat well ahead of buying.

What to Check For In A Used Boat before Buying

The boat should fulfill your purpose in every way and should be a good reason to save you money while buying, and in the longer run. It should not be defective to make you spend on it again and again. Therefore, checking the following factors, while buying a used boat on sale, would help you.

Engine

Here are some tips to check the engine:
  • Watch the oil by pulling the dip-stick. If the oil looks clear its fine. If it’s milky, it’s due to the water mixed in it.
  • Watch for carbon deposits on the plugs. Cleaner plugs indicate the sound condition.
  • The sound of the engine should not be too grainy. It should be smooth.
  • Do not give the seller the opportunity to warm up the engine before showing you. Instead reach 15 minutes ahead of the appointment time and take the test ride.

Wiring

Wiring is a very important thing to check in used boats. Some boats may have some wires and fuses changed since the first owner bought. Because of changes and bad alignment and organization, the working may look to be tangled and messy too. If you feel it’s too messy that a problem would take ages to get sorted for detangling and detecting the right wire, then look into another boat. An arranged wiring for all electrical appliances and lines is better.

Also, do turn on all electrical one by one, check, and also put them on all at once to check the working. Open the fuse box to find out if all fuses are from the same brand or different ones. The differences will tell you about how many times they got changed and would give you more reasons for inquiry about its condition.

Pump

The bilge pump often puts you into trouble later on. Hence, you should check it not just by putting on the switch to see if it runs or not, but also by turning it on manually to make sure that the floating switch also works. Check similarly all parts which take power from the pump.

The Other Points to Check:

  • Find out if the boat sits well on water, and floats okay when it is not loaded with any heavyweight items.
  • Unless the boat is not made of untreated wood you need not really worry about rots and molds etc. In case, you feel the deck under feet somewhat springy, you should check for rot underneath.
  • Check the stringers for signs of separation or damage.
  • Check for signs of separation in the deck and hull joint.

Finally

These above tips are for the buyers of old boats. If you are buying a new boat, then you need not check all of these, but should always take a test ride and ask as many questions as you may have in mind before you proceed.
